A lazy summer into daily two-a-days is where student-athlete injuries spike. How to build up safely, tell soreness from injury, and stay in the game all season.
Summer ends the same way most years. One week a student-athlete is sleeping until ten, floating in a pool, and touching a ball maybe twice. The next week they are at daily practices — sometimes two a day — in August heat, running conditioning, and being asked to move like they never took eight weeks off. That gap between what the body has been doing and what it is suddenly asked to do is where fall injuries live. Not bad luck, not weakness. A load that ramped too fast for the tissue to keep up.
This is a guide for parents and older athletes across St. Charles County on getting ready for the fall season and staying healthy through it. Why the first three weeks are the dangerous ones
Muscles, tendons, and bones all adapt to load — but slowly, and at different speeds. Give them a gradual increase and they get stronger. Spike the workload overnight and the tissue that adapts slowest starts to complain first. Sports-medicine researchers have a plain name for it: doing “too much, too soon.” It is the single most common reason a healthy kid limps into the first month of a season.
The pattern is predictable. A body that spent summer at a low, comfortable workload gets thrown into preseason two-a-days, and the training load quadruples in a week. Tendons and growth plates — the still-open cartilage zones near the ends of a growing kid’s bones — are the parts that fall behind. That is why shin pain, heel pain, and knee pain cluster in late August and early September, not in October when everyone is actually fitter.
The overuse patterns, sport by sport
Most fall sports break down along two lines: contact injuries, which are sudden and obvious, and overuse injuries, which build quietly until something finally hurts. The overuse ones are the ones a smart ramp can prevent.
- Soccer and cross-country. Running volume is the story here. The lower leg takes it first — shin splints (irritation along the shin bone), Achilles and heel pain, and knee pain around the kneecap. - Football. A mix — real contact loads on the neck, shoulders, and low back, layered on top of overuse from linemen’s repeated blocking and skill players’ sprinting. Contact injuries get evaluated on the spot; the quiet overuse aches are the ones that get played through and shouldn’t always be.
- Volleyball. Repeated jumping and overhead swinging load the knees (jumper’s knee, or patellar tendon pain) and the shoulder of the hitting arm. Landing mechanics and shoulder control matter more than raw effort.
- Marching band and color guard. Often left out of the injury conversation, and shouldn’t be. Carrying an instrument for hours in a fixed posture, plus long days on the practice field, load the shoulders, upper back, and low back the way a sport does. Treat these athletes like athletes.
Soreness, or an injury worth checking?
The most useful signal is not how loud the pain is — kids under-report and over-report in equal measure — but how it behaves. Ordinary training soreness is dull, spread across a muscle group, shows up the day after a hard effort, sits on both sides fairly evenly, and fades with a rest day. It does not change how the athlete moves.
Injury pain does the opposite. It localizes to one specific spot, sticks around or worsens even with rest, and starts to alter movement — a shortened stride, a favored leg, a serve that suddenly feels wrong. That shift in how they move is the tell.
Some signs skip the chiropractor and the athletic trainer and go straight to a pediatrician or physician: pain after a real fall or collision, night pain or pain at rest, numbness, tingling or weakness, a joint that gives way, or any fever with joint pain. Those are not “rub some dirt on it” situations. When in doubt, get it looked at.
Build training volume up gradually rather than all at once. A body eased into the season is a body that finishes it — the athletes who get hurt are almost always the ones who spiked their workload overnight.
A sane preseason ramp
The goal of the weeks before tryouts is not to arrive in peak shape. It is to arrive prepared to train — so day one of practice is a step up, not a cliff. A few things move the needle more than anything else:
- Build gradually. If a summer was mostly off, start reintroducing sport-specific work two to three weeks before the season, adding a little each week instead of flipping a switch on the first day of camp.
- Warm up on purpose. Five to ten minutes of movement that raises the heart rate and takes joints through their range beats standing-and-stretching. It is the cheapest injury insurance there is.
- Sleep is the recovery drug. Teenagers adapting to hard training need eight to ten hours. Under-slept athletes get hurt more and recover slower — this is not soft advice, it is the biggest lever most families never pull.
- Hydrate for August. Two-a-days in Missouri heat drain fluid and electrolytes fast; a cramping, dizzy, or headachey athlete is often simply behind on water.
- Get a little stronger first. Basic strength through the hips, core, and shoulders — even bodyweight work — gives tendons and joints something to lean on when the volume arrives.
Recovery once the season is running
In-season, the job shifts from building to maintaining. Nobody makes big fitness gains during a packed schedule of games and practices — the win is showing up healthy each week. That means protecting sleep even when homework piles up, refueling after hard sessions, and taking the easy days genuinely easy instead of grinding through them. A body that never gets a lighter day never fully recovers, and that is how a small ache becomes a mid-season problem.
The athletes who finish the season aren’t the ones who train the hardest — they’re the ones who recover the smartest.
