Weeks four to ten: why in-season athletes break in the middle.
The mid-season wall is not bad luck or bad conditioning — it is accumulated load with no scheduled easy week anywhere in it. What that does to tissue, and the warning signs that arrive weeks before pain.
Something predictable happens to high-school teams somewhere around the middle of a season. The training has not got harder, the schedule has not changed, and suddenly three players are carrying something. Coaches call it the mid-season wall. In strength and conditioning it has a duller name — accumulated fatigue — and it is the single most predictable injury window of the year. It is also largely preventable, which is the frustrating part.
Why weeks four to ten are the dangerous ones
A fall season is built backwards. Preseason has a ramp, a taper and a plan. Once games start, the plan quietly becomes "practise, play, repeat" for ten straight weeks with no scheduled easy week anywhere in it.
Tissue does not work that way. Tendon, muscle and bone all adapt to load, but adaptation happens during recovery, not during the work. Load without a periodic drop is just accumulation — the body never gets the quiet window it needs to consolidate. Around week four to six the fatigue is deep enough to change how an athlete moves, and by then the compensations are doing the damage rather than the sport.
This is what periodization means in practice: deliberately varying training load across a season so that hard weeks are followed by lighter ones. It is standard in strength and conditioning and almost absent from the average high-school in-season calendar.
What accumulated fatigue actually looks like
It rarely announces itself as pain first. In order, it usually shows up as:
- Output drops before anything hurts. Slower on the same drills, a shorter vertical, less pop in the third quarter than the first.
- Movement quality degrades. The knee that tracks fine when fresh starts caving in late in practice. Fatigue changes technique long before it causes injury.
- Soreness stops clearing. Instead of resolving in 48 hours, there is a baseline ache that never fully goes.
- Then something specific goes. A hamstring, a patellar tendon, a low back. The failure gets blamed on the moment it happened rather than the six weeks that set it up.
Read in that order, the first three are a warning system with weeks of lead time. Most teams only react at the fourth.
A mid-season injury is almost never caused by the play it happened on. It is caused by the four weeks before it.
What a sane in-season week looks like
The goal in-season is not to build anything. It is to hold what preseason built while staying fresh enough to compete, and that takes less work than people expect.
- Keep lifting, but cut the volume, not the intensity. Dropping heavy work entirely is how athletes lose strength across a season. Two short sessions a week at reduced volume maintains it; this is the piece most commonly abandoned in week three.
- One genuinely easy day, every week. Not a day off — an easy day. Movement without load.
- Protect the day after competition. Covered in detail in the 48 hours after a game.
- Deload deliberately around week five or six. A planned light week costs one week of training. An unplanned one costs three to six.
Why in-season strength work is not optional
The common belief is that games are enough training in themselves. They are not the same stimulus. Competition is highly variable, largely eccentric, and does nothing to maintain the maximal strength qualities that protect tissue — a hamstring that is strong at long lengths is far harder to tear, and nothing in a game trains that.

What an outside assessment adds is measurement of the things a season quietly erodes: single-leg control, ankle and hip range, how well an athlete decelerates when tired. Those are testable, they change across a season, and catching the drift in week five is a different conversation from managing a tear in week nine. That is not the answer anyone wants in week six of a season, but it is the one that keeps them on the field in week ten.
